Preparing for a Guardianship Application in Ontario

When someone you love can no longer manage important decisions, your immediate concern is often how to keep their care, finances, and living arrangements stable. If a guardianship application in Ontario is needed, gathering the right information can help clarify both the person’s needs and the responsibilities you are considering taking on.

Begin by identifying the decisions that are currently blocked, whether that involves accessing funds for care, managing investments, or dealing with a property. Any deadlines or urgent concerns should be raised early so they can be considered when determining how to proceed.

Useful documents may include existing powers of attorney, correspondence from financial institutions or care providers, and information about income, expenses, assets, and debts. You do not need a complete set of records before seeking advice, but an overview of what is known and what remains missing provides a helpful starting point.

An application for guardianship of property requires a management plan explaining how the person’s finances and property would be handled. This involves considering their ongoing needs, including housing, care, regular expenses, and other financial obligations. It is also important to identify who is currently involved in their support and whether there are disagreements that could affect the proposed arrangements.

Throughout the process, the person’s wishes, dignity, and involvement remain important. Guardianship affects decision-making rights and carries ongoing responsibilities, so the proposed arrangement must be considered carefully in light of the person’s circumstances and available alternatives.
